Traditional surround movie soundtracks must confine all sounds to the 5.1 or 7.1 channels of a typical home theater system. If a scene requires, say, a helicopter taking off, that sound has to be assigned to specific channels and mixed together with other sounds.
While the sound of the helicopter can move across channels, it can't go above you. You hear it only from the small number of predetermined locations defined by the speaker setup, not like in real life.
Dolby Atmos frees the sound from channels. It's the first cinematic audio format in which sounds exist as individual entities for each item, called audio objects. In Dolby Atmos, any sound, a helicopter, a car screeching around a corner, a melodic bird call can exist as it's own independent audio object, free of the restriction of being merged with everything else. They can be precisely placed and moved in real time anywhere through your home theater room, including overhead, to flow above and around you in three-dimensional space without affecting the other sounds and audio objects. Each sound is independent.
Through the use of audio objects, we are able to isolate and enhance overhead sound, with all the rich clarity, and pure power your speakers are truly capable of producing, Dolby Atmos turns your room into real cinema experience unlike any other standard surround sound system can.
